Bede Wind leads WWI Civic Remembrance Service

Bede Wind is leading South Tyneside’s Civic Remembrance Service on Sunday November 11th – one of a number of events in the borough marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

The concert, which starts at 1.30pm, is being held at the Customs House, South Shields.

Later, a 6ft aluminium silhouette of a soldier will be illuminated as part of a unique hour-long event at South Shields seafront where South Tyneside Council will join the nation’s tribute in lighting a beacon at 5pm.

People will be encouraged to gather at Harbour Drive car park to see live stage performances from local groups, learn about the extensive work of local projects which will be shown on a large screen, and hear moving readings of personal letters sent from the front line.

The evening will also recreate the sounds of the end of the First World War with a spectacular fireworks display set to WWI-themed music and gun fire and church bells drawing the event to a close.

The borough’s annual Armistice Day services and wreath-laying will also take place as usual.

Last tickets available for City Hall Proms concert

The last tickets are on sale for Daft As A Brush’s Last Night Of The Proms at Newcastle City Hall next month.

Once again the charity concert has enjoyed superb support and the 2,100-seat venue is expected to be at capacity, so we are advising anyone wishing to attend to book now.

The event, now in its fourth year, is raising funds for a new ambulance in support of the Great North Children’s Hospital.

Ticket information for the concert at 7pm on Saturday October 13th can be found here.

Busy autumn ahead for Bede Wind

We are looking forward to a busy autumn season with four big concerts here on Tyneside.

First up is the annual Whitburn Prom at Whitburn Parish Church on Friday October 5th. It is the 20th year Bede Wind has performed here and there is always an excellent turnout and enthusiastic audience.

The programme includes standards such as Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory, but also some new music including our first ever public performance of LOL – a fast paced celebration of cartoon tunes donated to us by the generous and talented Delta Concert Band in Vancouver following our joint concert in Newcastle in June.

The following weekend sees us again supporting superb regional charity Daft As A Brush’s Last Night Of The Proms at Newcastle City Hall, which is raising funds for a new ambulance in support of the Great North Children’s Hospital. Ticket information for the concert at 7pm on Saturday October 13th can be found here.

Finally, our annual Christmas concert is once again being held at Kings Hall, Newcastle University, at 7.30pm on Saturday December 15th. If you want a taster of this gig, see the videos of last year’s concert here.

We look forward to seeing you at one – or all – of these concerts soon!

Watch our joint concert with Canadian band

Our friends from the Delta Concert Band in Vancouver have sent us videos from our joint concert last month at Trinity Church, Gosforth.

Bede played a range of traditional Northumbrian music alongside standards like the Luftwaffe March in the first half, and Delta added a highly entertaining mix of Canadian pieces along with the odd Italian tune after the interval!

The bands joined to play two final pieces – Vaughan Williams’ An English Folk Song Suite led by Bede’s conductor Ernest Young and the Suite on Canadian Folk Songs by Morley Calvert, led by Delta’s Director of Music Jim Tempest – with nearly 70 players on stage.

You can see the videos on Youtube here…

Outdoor concert cancelled

The free outdoor concert in Newcastle city centre this Saturday afternoon has been cancelled.

We were due to play at Grey’s Monument from 1pm to 3pm to raise funds for regional charity Daft as a Brush, but due to circumstances beyond our control the band has been forced to call it off.

We will be performing once again in the Daft as a Brush Prom at Newcastle City Hall on Saturday 13 October with guest soloists and a Prom Choir.

Find out first about upcoming gigs on our concerts page or follow us on Facebook.

Having already played in Lincolnshire and Manchester prior to their visit to the North East, Delta take their UK tour across the border to Scotland now.

We wish them well.

Busy week ahead for Bede Wind

We have a busy week ahead, with three concerts – each with very different programmes.

On Sunday we are performing at Blyth Central Methodist Church’s Flower Festival – appropriately with a number of tunes on a floral theme!

Then on Tuesday  night we will be performing in a joint concert in Gosforth with the Delta Concert Band from Vancouver (pictured), featuring traditional Northumbrian and Canadian music.

Finally, we are playing in an outdoor gig at Grey’s Monument, Newcastle, next Saturday (16 June) in aid of the Daft as a Brush charity.

Sunday’s concert in Blyth starts at 3pm.

Our guests for Tuesday night’s joint concert, the 34-strong Delta Concert Band, are travelling from the west coast of Canada for a ten day tour of England and Scotland, also playing in Newark, Callander, Hellensburgh and conducting a workshop at the Royal College of Music in Manchester.

The band was formed in 1964 and as well as playing at venues across British Columbia, has recently toured Holland, Belgium and France and also performed in Maui, Hawaii.

The concert is at Trinity Church, Gosforth, next Tuesday (12 June), starting at 7pm, and the Grey’s Monument free outdoor concert next Saturday (16 June) starts at 1pm.

Bede Wind will then have a summer break from performing before embarking on a very busy autumn programme starting in October – for more information on this go to our concerts page: bedewind.com/concerts

Band supports charity’s 7,000-mile tour

Bede Wind is supporting North East cancer charity Daft As A Brush’s 7,000-mile fundraising tour of the UK.

We are performing for the charity at a concert in Edinburgh in March, two weeks into the two year tour of the coastal footpath walk of Great Britain and Ireland which starts on March 5th at the Millennium Bridge.

The concert, being held at the City of Edinburgh Methodist Church on March 17th, is the latest joint event with Daft As A Brush which has been supported by the band for the past two years.

We will also be performing again at the Daft as a Brush Prom at the City Hall, Newcastle, in October to raise funds for the charity, which provides free transport for people receiving treatment for cancer.
